Michael O'Brien enlisted in the North Irish Horse at Preston on 7 February 1918 (Corps of Hussars No.72034). He was described as being 5' 9" tall, with a fresh complexion, brown hair and blue eyes, with tattooed forearms. He stated that he was aged 24½, was born in Toonbeg [Doonbeg?], County Clare, and that he was a tailor.

He was reported to have deserted from the regiment's reserve base at Antrim on 17 February 1918, just ten days after his enlistment. It is not known if he was subsequentially apprehended.
